Marshmallow treats, it’s time to grow up and meet your Maker(’s Mark)–with bourbon and a touch of cinnamon. I read online about making Rice Whisky Treats and couldn’t resist giving this idea a try. I adjusted the original marshmallow treats recipe to add an extra 1/2 cup of Krispies to compensate for the additional liquid. And is this not the cutest nip anywhere, ever?! Cheers and let’s get on it! These are perfect fall snickity-snacks!
MAKER’S MARKMALLOW TREATS A.K.A. RICE WHISKY TREATS
5 ½ cups Rice Krispies
10-oz. bag marshmallows
½ stick (¼ cup) salted butter
2 tablespoons Maker’s Mark bourbon
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
salt to taste
Generously butter an 8 x 8″ baking dish. In a sauce pan, melt butter, stir in cinnamon and marshmallows. When marshmallows have melted completely, remove from heat and quickly stir in bourbon and a sprinkle of salt, then add the Rice Krispies and stir and stir and stir until evenly combined.
Press treats into buttered dish and add a sprinkle of finishing salt over the top if you like (oh, I really like!).
Cut treats into squares with a sharp knife.

You guys are too funny. The treats are even nicer! 😉
October 10, 2011 at 10:40 pm
I loved that idea too. Definitely going to have to try it. How did the cinnamon work with the Maker’s?
October 11, 2011 at 7:16 am
Thanks, Kt! I was very happy with the small amount of cinnamon I used–enough to give it a hint of spice without overpowering the treats. Guess who bought three bags of marshmallows last night so she can make some more? 🙂 Let me know what you think when you make ’em!
October 11, 2011 at 12:10 pm
I’m making these this evening. Can’t wait. cinnamon and all!
October 11, 2011 at 12:22 pm

What a waste of good bourbon! 😛

Good bourbon is NEVAH wasted on this kat. NEVAH. Though this kat is occasionally a little wasted on good bourbon. 😛

I must make these. Clever update on a classic.

Thank you, Ivy! 🙂

Will have to try this with some Elijah Craig too. I wonder how Bulliet would work in it….
March 12, 2012 at 10:03 pm
I am sure any of your favorite bourbons will be tasty–just so happens Maker’s is mine. 🙂 Enjoy your treats and thanks for stopping by.
March 12, 2012 at 11:51 pm
I’d make these but melt some chocolate and put Maker’s Mark in the chocolate, stir and pour over the yummy treats.
March 13, 2012 at 5:31 am
Try dropping the cinnimon and use Makers 46 instead. It has the spicier taste built in.
March 13, 2012 at 6:42 am
if you added a half cup of cereal, should not your recipe read 6-1/2 cups ???
my treats recipe calls for 6 cups of cereal and you mentioned you added a half cup to compensate for extra water?

It seems a little light on the bourbon, which leads to the question, is there such a thing as too much bourbon for this recipe?
March 26, 2012 at 5:20 pm
HA HA, well, yes–probably there is such a thing as too much bourbon for this recipe UNLESS you don’t mind soggy rice krispies. 🙂 Let me know if you figure out how to make it boozier without making it soggier!
March 26, 2012 at 10:48 pm
I gave a couple of stiff pours from the bottle and ended up with a third of a cup or more in the batch. Not soggy at all. Thanks for the recipe!
March 27, 2012 at 6:19 am
EXCELLENT, Wayne–I’ll hafta give that a try next batch. Thanks for testing! 🙂
April 7, 2012 at 3:38 pm
A third of a cup? Did you eat them with a spoon then? I used a quarter cup and while the krispies weren’t soggy, they did have that somewhat stale feel to them. The bigger problem was the treats not holding together so well. I’ll try it with 3T. next time. Very tasty though!! …and I think I’ll be making the “kids” version with cinnamon from now on!
April 7, 2012 at 4:25 pm
3 tablespoons sounds like a better bet, Phil. Thanks for letting us know. See, there is such a thing as too much bourbon (at least in these treats)–and why waste it there when you can save the extra for drinking? 🙂

Some tips for anyone that has never made rice crispy treats (like myself). Use a double coiler to melt the marshmallow. No worries if you don’t have a “real” one – make one (http://bakingbites.com/2009/09/how-to-make-a-double-boiler/). Also, I suggest using mini marshmallows – they melt faster.
I added a splash of vanilla extract in there for some added flavor. They were a bit difficult to set up – I think I needed to let them cool longer. Once they cooled, they were much more solid. Brought these to a party and they were all devoured. Thanks for the great recipe!

This has to be one of the best things ever. It’s on the menu for my derby party!

EXCELLENT! Thanks for stopping by! Hope your horse wins! 🙂
April 1, 2013 at 8:20 pm
Just made these…did not like the cinnamon, it was averpowering…will add vanilla ext and more bourbon next time.
April 1, 2013 at 9:38 pm
Hmm. Thanks for your feedback, Stephen. The bourbon itself imparts a spiciness you may be tasting far beyond the cinnamon (because 1/4 teaspoon’s such a small amount)…so these treats might not be for you. Then again, maybe you’ll like them more your way. Happy experimenting!

If you ever have problems pressing rise crispy treats into a pan, lightly spray a sheet of wax paper with baking spray and press them does. They won’t stick to the wax paper at all!
February 13, 2014 at 9:36 pm
Krysta, I’ll do you one better–with butter. 😉
